TT-4007 - Les "Collections des Chefs-d'œuvre Artistiques"
de J. Girard & Cie. (1907 - 1908)

In the first decade of the 20th century, the Parisian mail-order business of J. Girard & Cie. made a speciality of selling complete phonograph outfits - a machine with a selection of records - on a monthly instalment plan. In April 1907, the various cylinder machines previously offered were replaced by Pathé's new disc phonograph. Pathé provided a set of 20 specially coupled 29cm discs (40 selections) for Girard. In November 1908, the selection of pieces was updated, with 39 of the 40 pieces changed. On these CDs, we present all the vocal recordings from these two showcase sets, plus as many instrumental selections as would fit the playing time of two CDs.
All recordings heard on the present CDs are those advertised in 1907 and 1908 by Girard & Cie., although in several cases, different editions (cylinders and later disc issues) have been preferred as source for the remastering, for reasons of their better sonic quality.
